How to Half Double Crochet (US terminology)

These instructions are given in UK terminology. 'Half treble crochet (htr)' is the same stitch as the American 'half double crochet (hdc)'.

Half treble crochet is between double and treble crochet in size, and looks slightly looser than double crochet. In this video we will show you how to create a half treble crochet. This stitch is used in the Tate Circular Rug pattern.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1:

First, make a foundation chain to your required length. Then afterwards make one chain extra.

Step 2:

For example, here is a chain of 10 and we need to add 1 more.

Step 3:

Find the 3rd chain from the hook.

Step 4:

Make a yarn over and insert your hook into the 3rd chain

Step 5:

Yarn over again and pull through the loop. There should be 3 loops on your hook.

Step 6:

Yarn over again and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Step 7:

You will have one loop left on your hook and you have completed the stitch.

Step 8:

Continue making the half treble crochet by repeating these steps.

Step 9:

Once you have finished your first row double check by counting the ‘V’s’.

Step 10:

To start the next row, turn your work around and chain 2 more. These are your turning chains.

Step 11:

Identify the first stitch of the row (not your turning chains).

Step 12:

Next, find your second stitch. This is also known as the 4th ‘V’ from the hook. This is where you’ll insert your hook next.

Step 13:

Make a yarn over.

Step 14:

As this is our second row, we now want to insert the hook through the entire ‘V’.

Step 15:

Yarn over again and pull through the loop.

Step 16:

Yarn over again and pull through all the loops.

Repeat this until you have completed the row.
