Learn how to cast off with the sewn method, using this easy, step-by-step tutorial by Melissa Georges.
How To Do A Sewn Cast Off
The sewn cast off is a great alternative to the traditional method as it gives a bit of stretch to the hem of your projects.
This technique is used in my free Summer Jute Tee knitting pattern.
You Will Need:
- A sewing needle
- A pair of scissors
Before you begin
When you’re ready to cast off, measure a length of working yarn about three times the length of the edge that you’ll be casting off.
Thread your sewing needle with the tail of yarn. You’re ready to start casting off!
Step 1
Insert the sewing needle purlwise into the first two stitches.
Step 2
Pull the yarn through both stitches, leaving them on the needle.
Step 3
Insert your sewing needle knitwise through the first stitch.
Step 4
Pull the yarn through the first stitch, and drop it off your knitting needle.
Repeat steps 1-4 until one stitch remains on your knitting needle.
Step 5
Insert your sewing needle purlwise into the last stitch, pull the yarn through, and drop the stitch off your needle.
You have now completed your sewn cast off!
